As an artist and designer with
a long-time commitment to sustainability, I've spent
years researching different ways to incorporate
environmental awareness into my creations. In
a time of economic uncertainty and fast fashion, new
challenges have presented themselves. How can
we design and produce locally using only sustainable
materials and create minimal waste while still
keeping our collections affordable? One
solution has been to focus on designing timeless,
classic styles that can be re-invented and worn for
many years, which allows us to offer our customers
treasured wardrobe staples that are also smart
investment pieces.
Through my research, I've also found a renewed love
for thrift and vintage clothing.
In the same way that I find inspiration in sitting
down at the design table and creating a new garment,
I find inspiration in exploring second hand shops. I
relish these treasure hunts, where I'm able to
rediscover beautiful finds that
have been forgotten, always pondering on each
garment's journey - where it's been, who wore it,
and, of course, how to rescue it from a life
destined for the landfill. Just as
purchasing from clothing from local, independent,
sustainable designers is an eco-conscious decision,
so is purchasing gently worn clothing.
And in a tough economy, secondhand fashion can be
one of the most affordable means to create an
eco-friendly wardrobe.
Through my secondhand adventures, I came up with the
idea to offer a new line of used and vintage
clothing here at Mountains of the Moon. With a
keen eye for style and awareness of the necessity to
be frugal, my team and I have taken the work out of
rummaging through racks at resale shops by
handpicking only the chicest pieces for our
customers. This special collection -
aptly named
"Rediscovered" - features one of a kind
garments that are gently worn, recycled treasures
ready to be given new life - by you.
